Insecurity in Addis Abeba, towns

The presence and stationing of a vast number of Federal Police Force in Addis Abeba and other towns has caused anxiety among the populace, ESAT’s reporters have said.

It is to be recalled that the Federal Police Force warned on Thursday that it would take actions if Ethiopian Muslims hold protests after Friday prayers. The organizers of the protest, Demtascehn Yesema (Let our voices be heard), have cancelled their protest overnight subsequent to the Police statement. Federal Police harassed and detained a few Muslim youth near Filweha, in Addis Abeba yesterday.

ESAT has learnt that the government will conduct mass arrest of those it suspects are behind the protests before the end of the Ramadan fasting season.

The nationwide anti government demonstrations and meetings called by the Unity for Democracy and Justice Party (UDJ) in Mekele, Bahir Dar, Jinka and Araba Minch cities on Sunday August 4, 2013 have also played a part in increasing the tensions. The cadres of the ruling party have continued bullying the residents of the towns not to take part in the protests and harass members of UDJ engaged in promotional works.

Members of the UDJ that have been detained in Mekelle have reportedly been released although those that in Bahir Dar have been told that they cannot promote Sunday’s rally unless they show a “permission letter from the Bahir Dar Communication Bureau”.

ESAT has learnt that UDJ has distributed flyers in Bahir Dar city that call the residents to take part on Sunday’s peaceful rally.
