The Calm Transition

The rumour mill of the nation spent a large portion of the past two months speculating over who would be the next president of the federation, replacing Girma Woldegiorgis, right, who served two six-year terms. Citizens anxious to get a hint of their next president had even organised their own list of candidates and polled their votes over social networking websites. A rather implicit convergence of attitudes was reached last week, however, when the name of a person with a rich experience in the political, economic and diplomatic sphere of the nation started to appear on the scene repeatedly. It all came to an end when the joint sessions of the two houses of the federation consensually voted Mulatu Teshome (PhD) – the former ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Turkey – to be the fourth president of the nation. Debates remain rife, however, on whether the decision of the Revolutionary Democrats is wise and representative enough.
