Newzimbabwe.com IMMIGRATION officials and local cops arrested 38 Ethiopian immigrants Monday as they tried to cross into South Africa using an illegal crossing point along the Limpopo River.
Beitbridge district ZRP boss, chief superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo confirmed the arrests adding investigations are continuing.
“We received a tip off that there were 38 Ethiopians being transported aboard a Senator Express bus from Mutare,” Chinhengo said.
“Our officers then teamed up with the department of immigration and apprehended them at Lutumba toll gate and investigations are still in progress.”
“We have had a numbers of such cases where these illegal immigrants come into the country come in through Mutare. We are not living any stone unturned we want to get to the bottom of this syndicate.”
Officials believe the Ethiopians entered the country from Mozambique through with the assistance of a prominent Mutare businessman.
The suspects, most of the aged between 20 and 30 years, were picked up by their ‘host’ at Valley Lodge along Beira Road in Mutare who was also expected to facilitate their travel to South Africa.
Police have also arrested the bus crew of Richmore Mundihwo, 40, Misheck Demhe, 33, and Roselyne Munhenga, 29.
“We will not tolerate such lawlessness where people go to the extent of hiring buses to facilitate illegal migration,” Chinhengo added.
