Inmates, arrested in relation to the fire in Harar, being tortured; Prison sources ESAT News April 1, 2014

Hundreds of people detained in Harar for voicing their protest against the frequent fires that broke out in the city last month, are being tortured and beaten by Federal security detectives, say ESAT’s sources in the prison,.
The youth detained inside a police garage have been denied food, meeting with relatives and are being beaten and ordered to “admit.” The sources said three young men, who are engaged in shoe trade, namely Takele Mulatu, Tagese Mulatu and Adane had lost their consciousness due to the ruthless pounding. Although Takele was taken to hospital immediately after he lost consciousness, his current whereabouts is not known.
There are also prisoners shot dead, the sources added. Tewokle, a young man is in hospital hit on his chest by a firearm.
Businesspeople, believed to have riches, are being detained under the pretext of being “suspected” and are then released by police who take bribes from them.
The Administration is giving conflicting statements regarding the recent fire accidents in Harar.
